hes demanding all and any profits made from the song "viva la vida" due to significant original material being taken from "if i could fly" i think its that.
i dont like coldplay all that much but i think this is absolutely shocking. if you've listened to both there is similiarty but not a great deal and if he wins this and doesnt give the money to charity its absolutely appauling.

if the songs are the same and Satriani's was the one written first, then sue away, why should somebody make a profit of your work?

It's only when like whole structures or large parts of songs are nicked that I reckon sueing should occur, not for little bits like what Oasis tend to nick.
I reckon its just as much of a crime to nick a band's sound as to nick a part of their song, cashing in on the sound of a band like

Think Joe Satriani will win unless the judge is a Coldplay fan
Quite a lot of the melodies from 'if I could fly' are fully ripped, could be played in time with Chris Martin's lyrics
I don't blame him for suing, people would hear that and think 'that sounds like he's doing a guitar solo to viva la vida'
I liked Coldplay's first album but from then onwards they just got worse and worse
Joe Satriani deserves to win unless its an amazing coincidence

Clint Boon played clips of both songs yesterday on XFM, Could hear a bit of a similarity but not overly I didnt think.

theres a vid on youtube where theyre both overlapped and fit nearly perfect. in the same key and everything, its mad.
i can see it could be coincidence, but i dont reckon it is.

I reckon its just as much of a crime to nick a band's sound as to nick a part of their song, cashing in on the sound of a band like i disagree Ferg, a bands sound is never original, i mean in the sense that, say, i dont know, oasis, take influence from other bands sounds and whatnot (i think im making sense) like there sound is an amalgamation of other bands. So if someone copies that, then so what because its just an altered version on some other band. thats where bands tap in to there own sound, by expanding on others. but if youve spent time and wrote/composed a peice of music, and then someone takes that as their own and makes a profit, then sue the f*ck out of them i say. (hope this made sense, its been a long night) |

I've just listened, they are very similar actually. I'd probably sue. It's a bit similar to with Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wonderwall, that was downright theft.
Aye you're right about bands nicking sounds and that, I just meant I find it more moral to nick bits of music from other bands than sounding alike to another band if you get me. I'm making a pretty rubbish point ;D

coldplay already said they'll split next year.
so cal does that not mean you should be sueing this skint n demoralised lad?
my point is hes already making profit off his own work n now they are. but he shouldnt be taking money for their song unless hes giving it to charity because hes not getting that money unless coldplay had ripped him off in the first place.
would you not have to be stupid to intentionally plagurise?

I agree that he doesn't deserve ALL the money as its Coldplays version that is popular
But as Coldplay have plagurised (because they're stupid) and didn't acknowledge it before releasing the song they don't deserve a penny. Giving it to charity would be the for the best really as Joe Satriani is making a shed load out of this whole issue. If I could fly is his most popular song on itunes now and its nowhere near his best song.
Its a bit like how the rolling stones get all the verve's money for Bitter Sweet Symphony, except the rolling stones won't give it to charity (I think I'm right)

like they dont have enough money as it is. joe satriana is very successful and very wealthy so fair enough take the money away from coldplay but dont keep it.
when muse sued nescafe for using their cover of feeling good. they got around 50k i believe. and during their second album period that was probably a large sum of money to them, it was all given to charity.
i dont mind him sueing if he feels hes been intentionally robbed, just shouldnt keep the money.
