"nice to have some support. all about the money, not about the credit. " It's true though, aha. It's the way everyone is now. Credit doesn't pay the mortgage

Very true, I just think it's shit.
If you're tryna make an actual point, getting a payout for it kinda demeans it I think.

The Strokes stole the riff from Last night straight from Tom Petty. As is has been mentioned above, Noel Gallagher has been stealing material for years. Cigarettes and Alcohol is pretty much identical to t-rex 'bang a gong'. Artists constantly take bits and bobs from other artists. It seems Coldplay might have taken the opening riff as well as used the same chord progression. If they were aware of song it is a very careless mistake on their behalf. However, how many songs have been made in the world of music. I bet countless artists have songs similar to every artist out there today. it is impossible surely to make completely original music every time. I personally think it is a sh1t song anyways but it does seem very similar.
If Joe Satriani was succesful with this I would have no problem if he decided to keep the money and not give it to charity. He has no obligation to. I imagine he would end up giving some of it away, but people should not begrudge him for keeping it.

Fair enough, but I don't see his right to earn money off it, if he is morally outraged by it. He can condemn Coldplay in his eyes and in society's eyes for trying to rip off his work but when there's money involved it just creates the perception that there's a more sinister ulterior motive behind it.

The music world spins on an axis of money, "re issue, re package, re package", if it's not the artists in it for the money its the labels, its a fact of life. It's the same as any other industry, and it's not like Chris Martin hasn't got the money to fork out for royalty fees and all that is it?

Nah its a commendable idea. But I doubt it'll happen, and I suppose its their money to do with as they want. We don't know much the royalties will be either, once you deduct all the other costs

I'd care about the money more than the credit, really, cos it's not like every time Viva La Vida is on the radio someones going to go "BY THE WAY JOE SATRIANI WROTE A BIT OF THIS", with the money you can just leave it and get on with things. Aye I'm a fan of niether Coldplay nor Joe Satriani

looks, its morally wrong. He wrote that hook of the song. the bit that makes it memorable.
for fucks sake, theres no two ways about it.
ive got like an oasis song book, and at the top of the page for "Hello" it says something like "This song contains elements of its good to be back by Gary Glitter (i think thats the song)
Glitter will get money for that. If the people who own Trex music want to sue Oasis for Cigarettes and alcohol they probably could (unless its already been settled)
the crack is, steal someones music and pay the price.
