you need to realise liam wrote jude when he was 18-20 years old, for a musician this album is a maturity and there exploring new avenues musically. he'll probably never write another cavorting or fallowfield again, bands progress, noel did with oasis. personally this album is a better offering than falcon in my own opinion....

i love it, the louder you play it the better it becomes, van der graaff is beautiful, as is marquee. Push yourself and welcome to the rave really stand out with volume up and bass up. oh and something you cant have is amazing full band.

Definitely grown on me, even over the last 24 hours...
Are you in love with a notion, Van der Graff, Push Yourself and Money all solid gold
Lose Control + Welcome to the Rave both listenable, but not sure if I'll still be listening as much come Feb/March. Both better live.
When you want something you can't have + Here Come the Young Men, again both listenable but don't stand out enough for me to want to listen over and over
Save Rosemary in Time, Sharks Are Circling and Marquee do nothing for me unfortunately :/
On the whole though the album sounds a little over-produced. Quite a few of the songs have a little bit of reverb/echo whatever you want to call it, which makes it sound like it's been recorded in an arena rather than a studio, takes the edgyness away a bit IMHO.

I've listened to it fully just the once. The main criticism is the over-production. Welcome To The Rave has suffered because of it. The album is listenable, but it really could've been a top album without the over-production. Favourites at the moment include Are You In Love With A Notion, Something You Can't Have and probably Marquee. Hopefully the others become more prominent with a few more listens.

Definitely a grower I had the tracks rated as this after the first 2 listens: AYILWAN: 4/5 Lose Control: 2/5 Van Der Graff: 2/5 Push Yourself: 3/5 WYWSYCH: 4/5 WTTR: 3/5 SRIT: 2/5 Sharks Are Circling: 2/5 Marquee: 4/5 Money: 3/5 HCTYM: 3/5
Now it's more like;
1: 4/5 2: 2/5 3: 4/5 4: 4/5 5: 5/5 6: 4/5 7: 3/5 8: 3/5 9: 4/5 10: 4/5 11: 4/5
The only thing that makes a song/album a classic is if still sounds good after years. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

After having the album for a few weeks now I would agree that it is definitely a grower. Was a bit dissapointed at first but really starting to enjoy it now. Think it still sounds over produced but a much better effort than I originally gave it credit for.

When i first got my ears round Anna i wasnt entirely sure- its slightly different to what the band have done before but the more and more you listen to it the better it gets! its a smooth sound and liam in sounding great! i have never been a fan of SRIT and Money is ok but my stand out tracks are Marque Here Come The Young Are You In Love With A Notion (some fantastic writing on that!!) and Van Der Graff- different sound and i really think this is going to be an amazing live album!

Just got a review copy of the album so I've heard it a couple of times. Have to say, it's a lot better than what I was expecting. I'd say pretty much all tracks bar 2 are brilliant. Really majestic pop music. Can't wait to listen even more.
I still think Money sounds like a Black Keys song though.

When I first heard it it reminded me of a riff I wrote not so long ago, shear coincidence as it is so common.

ANNA: 7/10
Are You In Love With A Notion?: 8/10 - Instantly fell in love with this tune. Lyrically it's a typical Courteeners song that could sit on any of their 3 albums but the production takes this up a notch and it's incredibly catchy. Hope this gets a run out live.
Lose Control: 8/10 - Possibly my favourite song on the record, I think they nailed this in terms of the production, encapturing the meaning and lyrics of the song. It's a dark tune with an explosive chorus and its brilliant live.
Van Der Graaff: 6/10 - Love the guitar work in the song but lyrically its not the greatest. Get's skipped a lot after the original few listens.
Push Yourself: 7/10 - Another of my favourites, love how the band have tried to do something different again. Another quite dark and fast rock'n'roll tune.
When You Want Something You Can't Have: 8/10 - At first, I thought this song was average but after a few listens it has grown massively. Such a beautiful song that would not sound out of place on Falcon. Very impressed with this one.
Welcome To The Rave: 6/10 - A fantastic song which has been let down massively by the production. When I heard this at the arena it blew me away, both sonically and visually. But they have left a lot to be desired on the album, vocals & drums sound unnatural. With better production this song could have been the best on the album by far.
Save Rosemary In Time: 7/10 - This song has impressed me ever since I heard it back at Haigh Hall. I love the arrangement and how different it is from usual Courteeners tunes. It hasn't disappointed me one single bit, I love it. Love all the guitar work - possibly the heaviest thing they've ever done. Needs to be put back in the live set.
Sharks Are Circling: 7.5/10 - This was the song that has shocked me most on the album, I never expected to hear them do a tune like this. Lyrically I think it's one of his best and I love the production and guitar work going on in the background.
Marquee: 7/10 - It's a great song, but I just find it a bit dull. Nothing done here that hasn't been done before, maybe could have added another dimension or left it as a b-side.
Money: 7/10 - Another solid rock tune, a little bit out of place in the second half of the album but I love that they've tried something different again and gone for a fast and heavier vibe.
Here Come The Young Men: 6/10 - Not a bad tune but again a bit dull and lyrically not the greatest. A few nice guitar lines in the song though that sound a bit like The Cure. Another one that gets skipped a lot now.
THE VERDICT: Overall its a solid album, one that I thoroughly enjoy listening to but it's not as good as I expected it to be. Especially after waiting 3 years.
The production is a bit all over the show, some songs are better for it but some come off worse. Also lacks a bit of cohesion what with different styles being used (there are too many different things happening between tracks 6-11 for me).
All that's stopping it being an amazing album is 1 or 2 mediocre tunes and a lack of firm direction in the sound and production. Hopefully a good warm-up for Album #4.
