The Verve are not a Manchester band though. Greater Manchester maybe. yes, Wigan, a borough of Greater Manchester. Yep therefore there not a Manchester band.

I don't think that 'Manchester Band' was specific enough, are we rating greater manchester bands?? If so, then we can include the courteeners further down the line (rochdale a borough or greater manchester), and we could include other bands from like Wigan. The Smiths, Stone Roses and Oasis and such a problem, they are all from central manchester (ardwick, longsight, salford etc.) As for Joy Division, they are from Macclesfield, a borough of Cheshire, which couldn't classify in either category, so they cannot be in any list of Manchester bands whatsoever. Anyhow, I think that we should include any band from the greater manchester area and even as far as Cheshire (Joy Division), and basically, any band that we have called a Manchester band over the years. So on this definition, my top 5 are: The Smiths The Stone Roses Oasis Joy Division (possibly James or Elbow, couldn't pick, don't know either well enough)

Glad you mentioned Elbow Ant. reat band, but to be specific Elbow are from Bury, Greater Manchester. Anywho, No one mentioned Elbow before Dontask other than myself, I've only heard select stuff but from what I know they have influenced alot of todays artists and I know they are successful from doing their own thing, which is what makes a great band. I dont really think they are influencing many of todays artists in all honesty. I dont se any obvious similiarities with any new act. I am glad they are finally getting the credit they fully deserve though and people are including them in things like this.

If we're only including bands from the actual City Of Manchester, then you're limited to those few mentioned above. Even as far as the Roses are concerned, Ian Brown and John Squire were originally from Timperley, Trafford, before moving to Longsight.

The thread is titled best bands from Manchester. Not best bands from Greater Manchester.

Correct, I started the thread and it was intended as Manchester on the whole, not just Greater Manchester, I meant to class Salford, Wigan, wherever

Maybe Morrissey in an illegaly imported Arab so therfore we cannot include him in this list.
Why the f*ck does it matter which specific region of Manchester/ Greater Manchester/ other cities they come from. If they are traditionally celebrated as what we stereotype as a 'Manchester Band' then we can include them. Oh, and just for the record, Salford may be a city, but still a region of greater manchester.
So why don't we just talk about any band we forsee as a 'Manchester Band' no matter which specific town or region they are from.

Salford may be a city, but still a region of greater manchester. I never denied that. You implied Salford was part of "Central Manchester" whereas I pointed out it isn't. haha sorry I get slightly annoyed when people think Salford is part of Manchester when it is not.
