This is a debate I often find myself having, but what is the best band from Manchester ever?

Yeah the smiths
Oasis second with Stone Roses close in third
Stone roses influenced Oasis but I think Oasis are a better band considering everything like achievements/good albums/still together etc

Aye I agree, the Smiths, then Oasis, then the Roses, then probably Joy Division. Oasis answered Stone Roses' question if you get me, did what it was the Roses set out to do

I couldn't choose from personal opinion, but choosing from what they did, I would say:
The Smiths- simply because they did something not many bands could get away with by making music that was completely different to everyone else, which all the great bands did, and on top of this, they are fronted by the cleverest and most whity person to ever write songs, and had their music written by the greatest guitarist the country has ever produced, and finally, they made 3 classic top class albums which in my opinion cannot be faulted (the first 3)
The Stone Roses- these 4 men started brit pop in my opinion, and the great thing about them is that you take Ian Brown as a great songwriter, John Squire as again one of the countries great guitarists and songwriters, Mani a top class bass player which we don't have many of in the modern music scene, and finally Reni who in my opinion is the most gifted drummer ever, so great, that they had to abandon certain songs of sets when he left such was the complexity of his drum beats. Aswell as being one of a select few bands where all four members where super talented in their own rights, they made one of the all time great pieces of music in their first album which will never be forgotten. The only thing that's puts them behind the smiths is that they didn't keep the great music flowing.
Oasis- If this was on personal opinio then I would struggle to put them in any lists, because they really get on my tits, but on some of the great music that they have produced you can't help put include them. To think that one special talent in Noel Gallagher can set the britpop scene alight again after the demise of the Roses is great, and to think he made something of a talentless yob in Liam Gallagher is even greater. One thing that they have over any other manchester bands is that they have lasted and stayed popular (don't ask how), they have also made 2 legendary albums that I and most of you alike will play to your grandchildren, and made countless brilliant B-sides compiled into The Masterplan, which could be classed as an album in itself. The only thing that puts them below the above 2 is that they mite have outstayed their welcome, and made way to much in the way of crap, and have churned out to much of the same shite. Or maybe it's a personal thing.
Others to get a mention are Joy Division, James, Elbow, and hopefully in the coming years, you know who......

I guess its more of a personal thing as you could argue good points for the stone roses and Oasis for 'second place'
For me its Oasis, seen them live and personally DM, WTSMG and the masterplan are 3 of my favourite albums ever........others aren't too bad either, not many people like the rest but I still like Be Here Now and Dig Out Your Soul is good too
Stone Roses first album is immense though, hard to decide really
Oasis just remind me of growing up and defo had more of an influence in the music I love, they introduced me to the likes of the smiths and the stone roses so your right Ant its more a personal thing

The Stone Roses without a doubt I'm not even arsed what people say The Second Coming is class the first album speaks for itself.

No one mentioned Elbow before Dontask other than myself, I've only heard select stuff but from what I know they have influenced alot of todays artists and I know they are successful from doing their own thing, which is what makes a great band. I don't care what people say about the second coming, the roses made arguably the greatest album that will ever be written in their first album (not forgetting 'The La's) which is enough to put them ahead of Oasis, who in fairness have made 3 top class albums but they won't be remembered the same as Roses debut. As I said though, no one has the consistancy of the smiths, which makes them who they are.

Definitely Maybe and What's The Story are fantastic albums, don't get me wrong, but the fact that Oasis have stayed together so long doesn't hold much weight, as none of their subsequent albums have got anywhere near those first two. They are repetive and often boring, and they sell records purely on lingering reputation from the mid-90s. On the other hand, The Stone Roses have done nothing since 1995, and yet their debut album (and, to an extent, the second) is still widely regarded as a absolute classic. Finally, no-one's mentioned the Verve yet. We've had people prasing Elbow for doing their own thing, yet the Verve did that and have had much more success.

The Verve are not a Manchester band though. Greater Manchester maybe.
The Smiths for me, followed closely by The Stone Roses. Not sure after that its close between Joy Division, The Chameleons, Elbow.

I'd say James probably make the top 5, and Joy Division. A bit longer down the line I do reckon Courteeners
