Nice thread, some good points Interesting article that talks of this, I agree quite a bit 'the myth' of rock stars has certainly died. Maybe it's because they're isn't much of a 'barrier' between fans and bands anymore

An interesting question to ask though is, are rock stars still relevant? Is the concept of a musician who interacts purely through the music but other than that is unapproachable and somewhat mythical still a relevant thing in todays musical climate? Lady Gaga is prime example of this in modern music, I see it as a good thing

Fergal said it well.
There are rock stars about, but simply because it's not part of the popular music scene, the don't get spotted. Look at a few bands, I mean I don't know many modern bands, but the ones I do know are generally fronted by fucking good rock stars, but because they aren't relevant bands at this present time, they don't really get noticed, and they aren't stars.

there probably needs to be more of each though ferg. for every noel gallagher; a thom yorke or for every graham coxon; a tom morello. Playing Devils Advocate, who's the real rock star there? Surely Noel Gallagher? Rising from nothing to everything, maintaining it and entirely on his own terms, uniting people with music appealing to the masses without comprimising quality...that's what being a rock star is all about to me. Thom Yorke, and I am a Radiohead fan, is surely part of the contingent bringing down the rock star? Blogging, webcasts, political activism etc

haha i wasnt thinking in the same way you were i dont think. i was going for noel and graham having that approachable vibe whereas Yorke and especially Morello I dont feel like I could have a normal conversation. maybe theres some bias, but i do think noel is a hero.
your points were right though but I dont think idealism that both Yorke and Morello show is detrimental to the "rock star" facade....blogging on the other hand...

Cameras in the studio, DVDs showing groups putting albums together can take the mystique of a band away...I enjoy them, I find it all very intresting but looking at from another angle its maybe weaking our views.
Like Noel said, he thought bowie was from Mars, granted he was a strange looking fucker but i get what hes saying. I talk to people on facebook who I would never have had the chance to normally....thats the world we live in now.......your so called rock stars are too accessible.

When Bernie Rhodes was managing the clash in the early days, he used to basically blur there history so no one knew much about them. Adds to the mystique

When the Arctic Monkeys arrived there was a lot of mystique surrounding them and how they became this internet sensation but they refused to do interviews, which sort of had the same effect. People were intreguied. I like that.
Weller is a rock star. Bowie is a rock star. Noel and Liam are rock stars. Its more the artists of old that live up to it. Theatrical, interesting people.
Is there anyone around for us to intreguied about? People go mental for Lady Gaga. Maybe she is the modern day rock star. Theatrical. Out spoken. I dont like her music but she is a big performer. Saw her at Glasto last year waiting for Bloc Party I think it was. It was impressive.

yeah but, in the least biased way possible, idiots go mental for Lady GaGa. For me shes missing the point in every aspect of her musical career. From live performances (a solo piano led Poker Face??? how touching...)to her outfits, which are over the top just for the sake of it. Apart from that lyrics include "oh my god this beat is sick, i wana take a ride on your disco stick" are cringe inducing....shes a sycophant creater xD
josh homme = rock star, just thought id add.

It's a weird subject. I think everybody has different interpretations of what a Rock Star is.

Lady Boy Blah Blah is nothing but a attention seeker, she can play the piano....but so what? I'm sure there are people on her who can play the piano...their not being courted as the next madonna are they?
She's the pits...fake blood, and a stupid amount of clothes changes, trying desperatly to cover up a blatant lack of originality and talent!

If like me you consider Sid Vicious to be the ultimate rock star ever, then just check against my brief list of Sids and see how others measure up.
Sex Drugs Rock’n’Roll Iconic image Clothing that would get you arrested Obnoxious Violent towards fans Prison Murderer More drugs Early grave Simpsons parody
I’d say if they tick half of them, they got the makings of a true rock star.

josh homme = rock star, just thought id add. Great shout. He is rock and roll. He is iconic, a good muscian. Intriguing. Lady Boy Blah Blah is nothing but a attention seeker, she can play the piano....but so what? I'm sure there are people on her who can play the piano...their not being courted as the next madonna are they? Dont get me wrong, I dont like her music, or her for that matter, but I am sure there are plenty of people on here who can take drugs, play the guitar and mouth off. That in itself doesnt make someone a rock star. There is more to it that that. Lukes example is a good one.
