In terms of guitaring all in all, I couldn't say, I've a soft spot for some classical guitar and them lads are superb. In terms of "popular music guitaring", it has to be Johnny Marr, no doubt

sorry i'll clarify abit. this is dead opinionated and technical skill is only important if u want it to be. i meant overall like, stage presence, style whatever you think.

Aye. I'd still say Johnny Marr though. He can conquer it all. Hendrix was great...but Marr took it to a whole new level and didn't just rip off blues (however good Hendrix was at ripping off blues), he did sumat new. I've heard few guitarists in pop music who can make sumat as beautiful as Back To The Old House, as danceable as things like This Charming Man and Handsome Devil and as frightening and massive as How Soon is Now or London. And he's incredibly cool, you only have to look at the What Difference Does It Make video for that

I really dont think I am in any position to judge. As so many different types of music use guitars I probably dont know who half the best guitarists around are.
I mean, Mark knoffler is a fantastic guitarist, then you look at Jimmy Page, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Slash, Marr, Richards. In the modern era people like Coxon, Greenward, Bellamy are all fantastic guitarists. No way is it possible to pick one. The instrmaent is so complex. I play it myself and techniquly I imagine I am shite. They all make it look so easy. Some of the best guitarists around are probably not playing in commercial or mianstream music so we dont even know who they are.

Jay-Z, lol, very funny.
I have to agree with Fergal, I just have a thing for Mr Marr, I'm a massive fan of the smiths and have a love for Marr, what he does is just fucking brilliant, magic more than anything, I've heard so many people say in interviews how hard they find it to play something by Marr, one of them being Noel G. Maybe we are saying this because when we were little the smiths were one of the first bands we heard of from our parents and that, or maybe not and he is just a fucking magician.

Id have to go with Marr too, The Smiths are immense and probably have the greatest guitarist and frontman (i'm sure many would argue with that though)
Marr and Morrissey, hard to beat that
