Who do you guys believe to be the best songwriters since the Millenium had everyone all scared?

Doherty/Barat (Together), Doherty (alone), Alex Turner (possibly the best), Mike Skinner (more lyricist than songwriter in this case), Liam Fray (I can't deny that, only the NME can) and from what I've seen, James Allen is fast emerging as one of the best songwriters of the past 8 years. James Skelly is also superb, one of the best at writing proper songs, like fully formed pieces of classic pop

Upton, you think Pete Doherty is the best songwriter over the past 8 years hands down?
I can not agree with this. He is a very good writer, and has made some fantastic songs, and written some great lyrics. But to say he is hands down the best is naive in my opinion.

The list is quite a big one. We have to remember people like Paul Weller have released material in this century. 22 dreams is arguably Wellers best work, so he has to be up there. As does Thom yorke/Greenward colabo, Nick Cave (although not my cup of tea, a sound writer)

They did a feature in the guardian (I know we don't like them nasty pasties but) on Great lyricists and Turner featured in that - it was a week long thing and you got a little book with a bit about him and some of his best work...really nice I got it to keep - can't remember any other ppl who were featured other than Leonard Cohen...don't think any were from 21st century.

His lyrics are the deepest and most poetic.

Fair enough, that is your opinion. I find it a tad supprising that you think he is hands down the best. It is certianly not a given. Obviously for you it is so fair doos.

i think doherty needs many many more classics before he becomes the best songwriter of the 21st century.

In terms of lyrics and pure wit I would have to say Alex Turner, he has said so many funny things in his songs. But I can't help but love the Doherty Barat partnership, the lyrics aren't as good as Turner IMO but the music is fucking class.

Never happen Mike. Its a dream that will never be satisfied.
I have to agree with Ant. For me Alex Turner has it all, and so many different styles to his writing. I honestly think he will end up becoming an absolute great. Up there with the very best. He makes it seem so easy. I read a love letter he sent to his stunning mrs a while back that was posted somewhere on the web. Even that was fucking clever and original. While some greats write bad stuff here and there, he is yet to do so. I know his career is young, but 3 number 1 albums in as many years. Something special is this lad at the tender age of 22. You can rest assured that the next monkeys album will grace the top spot as well.
