What does everyone make of the 5 piece from Manchester? In my opinion they are one of the most underated bands around. Front man Guy Garvey is a fantastic lyricist, and album after album excells himself (they currently have four albums).
I can understand that they are not to everybodys states, but I am suprised that is it only now they are starting to get some mainstream and commercial backing.
What does everyone else make of them?
Does everyone even know who they are?
Just wanting to know people's opinions on the band.

Elbow are a cracking band, they dont really seem to get as much mainstream recognition as perhaps they should, but thats not a bad thing to be fair.
On Day Like This is one of my fave songs of the year. Classic.

I wouldnt say better. Their new stuff is really good, but check out alot of their old stuff as well. Songs such as
Red, New Born Powder Blue Station Approach Forget Myself Leaders Of The free World Mexican standoff
Some absolute tunes in their backlog. One Day Like This is a beautufull song as well.

To be fair I like the fact they are not over exposed either. I was just having a discussion with a mate of mine recently who dismissed them as being shit. He had hardly heard any of their work and just because they have been around a long time and have not made it massive in the commercial market was enough to make his opinion up. Glad got a few fellow supporters on here.

Got into them around 2000 when I got thePowder Blue ep on Uglyman records. Was really into them for a while but lost a little interest around the second album. Really liked the last two albums and Seldom Seen Kid would be in my top three albums this yr. Going to the Leeds date on the Oct tour. Certainly not critically underated as rarely see a bad Elbow review but certainly underated in terms of record sales. Liked the bit in the NME review of St Jude where he likened Fray to a younger brother of Garvey - seemed quite apt somehow.

Hardly heard anything by them to be honest, but I've heard a little bit of their new stuff and they are pretty damn good.

Didnt think many would know who they were refering to. Garvey is certainly a very very talented writer, so for Liam to be refered to his younger brother is certainly a compliment.

Elbow have won this year's Nationwide Mercury Prize for their album The Seldom Seen Kid.
Chuffed they have won this award. Congratulations to the lads. Had strong competition from Radiohead and The Last Shadow Puppets to name just two.

I saw them on the news saying they preferred people to buy there album instead of downloading it as they wanted it to be heared as a whole body of work and not just the odd song, I thought that was a good point!!!
You could say it means they get more £££ but they seemed genuine enough!!!!

I would fully recommend all their albums. The latest one that won the award is a very good album, seldom seen kid. I think if you just downloaded a random song you might not get into it as much as listening to the whole thing as a body of work from start to finish, just like they said. They are not everyone's cup of tea, just like every band, but they have such a wide variety of songs and styles I am sure there is something for everyone on there. When they use a string orchestra the arrangment is beautifull.
