I've not heard much talk about the La's on this board, which gets me a little, because I think that they are nothing less than genius, I could quite easily put they're first (and so far only) album in my top albums list.
So I just wanted to find out what you lot reckon to them and why they didn't make more music and that. They got back together about 3 years ago and are 'rumoured' to be writing alot of new stuff for a new record which would be highly anticipated by me and I hope all you.
(btw this is my first article, sorry if it's a bit bland)

There has been numerous thread on S&C over the last few months. The only problem is we can only talk about the one album (OK theres been the deluxe version and the BBC album) but there all the same tunes.
Lee Mather is a genius absolute 100% genius that album is one of the best albums ever made, its the best debut, better than defiantly maybe IMO or anything else.
When that album came out everyone else was listening to dance music but someone had the balls to sign em up. It sounded like something from 1964.....IT'S OUTSTANDING.
The only problem with the La's is Smack, it's fucked Lee Mathers up and I don't think were ever going to see another La's album again, epically after the drawn out process the last one was. Apart from some poor sod trying to find 'Genuine 60's Dust!!' they would have to compete with a controlling smack head of a lead singer/song writer.
He cant better that album and i think thats were the problems lie, he knows it too.
f**k**g COLOSSAL BAND, HIT AND MISS LIVE (ACCORDING TO REPORTS) BUT A GREAT BRITISH TREASURE NEVER THE LESS

Correct, the La's are absoloutely immense, or were, and the debut and only album still stands as one of the finest sets of tracks to come out of British music ever. The problem, as Mr Park said, was smack though. Lee Mathers were a perfectionist and you can't have a perfectionist trying to make a record whilst a smackhead, so he didnt get the sound he wanted and kept wanting to scrap each recording of the album (though I'm unsure how one does better their debut).
Freedom Song, I Can't Sleep, Timeless Melody and of course Looking Glass are testimants to just how great the La's were. And theres a mega set from Academy on youtube

I can't sleep is my all time favourite song along side I'am the Ressurection, if he can better the first album with a second then he will go down as one of the greatest artist ever, that is for certain.
