The debut album from The Heartbreaks has been a long time coming. Named after a local arcade, 'Funtimes' is about 'guilt and jealousy' according the Joseph Kondras, drummer and songwriter. The band formed in 2008, although their first officially released single didn't appear until 2010 on a compilation for Fierce Panda. Since then, the band has released three singles, all of which appear on the album. An album that took four years to make, no pressure then?
It doesn't show on the four pieces debut album, released on newly formed independent label 'Nusic Sounds'. "Liar, My Dear" kick-starts the album with pulsing drums and soaring vocals, accompanied by jangling guitars. This sets the tone for the rest of the album, with lead single from the record 'Delay, Delay' following up with a bang. This is where The Heartbreaks are at their finest, writing irresistible pop which should be rivalling those at the top of the charts. 'Hand On Heart' follows in a similar vein, with a chorus worthy of a stadium. They're playing clubs at the moment but with songs like these you can't see them being there for long. Having already supported The Courteeners, Morrissey, Hurts and less glamorously The Pigeon Detectives, you sense it's only a matter of time before the public picks up on what these artists have seen. The potential showcased does, unfortunately, fizzle out slightly. 'Winter Gardens' fails to en capture a sound as strong as the other tracks on the album, with the opening track and 'Jealous, Don't You Know' also failing to excite to an extent. Whilst they're not bad songs, they're not up to the high quality of the rest of the album.
'Remorseful' suffers somewhat from the production, produced by Edywin Collins on a one off basis compared to the rest of the album. As big an influence as he is, you can tell the difference to the rest of the album and the continuity is interrupted slightly. Earlier fans of the band may be familiar with earlier versions of 'Save Of Our Souls' amongst others, where the production on the album glosses over the tracks somewhat, giving them less of the punch they would otherwise pack. Aside from this, The Heartbreaks have delivered an album with undoubted potential, and an album which should see them grow to the size of those they've supported.
Funtimes is out on May 7th.
Touring throughout May, with a special pre-album release show at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester.
