Long awaited and heavily previewed 3rd album from Kyle, Kieran, Pete and Steve.
Grace – current single release – bangin’ guitars and fast, clever lyrics – everything you expect from the Dryburgh boys!
Underneath the Lights – occasionally previewed on the recent tours – thumping bass/drum beat entry giving away to – Kyle demonstrates his quickfire Dundee delivery which is synonymous with the band which recurs through the album
Tragic Magic - heavily previewed on the recent tours, three in and The View are on fire!
Girl – again heavily previewed on the recent tours – alas, a sanitised album version – jaunty playful song about Kyle’s ex-Australian girlfriend - awesome live when Kyle goes into “5 Rebeccas” vocal mode! Predict this will blow the Festival crowds away this summer!
Life – slow to get going but beautifully sung by Kyle with a fantastic orchestral chorus and poignant climax - the song in album #3 which does the same as "Unexpected" in "Which Bitch?"
Friend – song about “spaniarding” – complex tune, bit too repetitive for my liking but could be a “grower”
Beautiful – tempo upped back to a familiar sound/beat that any View fan will lap up
Blondie – right up there with the best they have produced in their 3 studio albums – I’m hearing Kyle’s Beatle’s influences all over this – especially George Harrison for some reason…
Sunday – was released as a freebie on their website back in December/January – was being played on the November preview tour last year and already a singalong on the set list – great bouncing song!
Walls – Slower with a great chorus, not a stand out track but definitely not a “filler”
Happy – has been previewed and would suggest this was a borderline selection for the album but was given the nod on the positive feedback from live performances
Best Lasts Forever – probably the pick of the songs not previewed alongside “Blondie” – can’t praise it enough – if you don’t hit the back track button after listening to this and “Witches” then I have to ask “are your ears painted on?”
Bonus Track – Witches – usual “bonus” ditty from The View which will be a firm favourite come festival time
Verdict (9.5/10)
11 stonking tunes and a couple which rely too much on the chorus. The lyrical content continues to impress, with the trademark delivery varied in pace, volume and intensity but distinctively Kyle Falconer.
Album contains nothing of the complexity of "Distant Dubloon" from the second album “Which Bitch?” but these talented boys are building a very solid base of tunes that will grace any stage for many years to come…
It will take a significant piece of genius to top this as my Album of 2011.
