Ellie Goulding is possibly 2010's most talked about artist, winning the BBC Sound Poll among other awards and looks on course for a top ten single with the single 'Starry Eyed', so the level of anticipation for the debut album reaches fever pitch. Unfortunately, the full length effort from Goulding doesn't do much to match expectation. Starting with 'Guns and Horses', nothing more than a piece of normal pop music and could be lyrically better (see title) but is just saved by a chorus that should be more representative of the whole song. The next three songs happen to be the best of the album, 'Starry Eyed', 'This Love', and 'Under The Sheet's, all perfect slices of electro pop that indicates just why Goulding is the most tipped artist of the year. Each packs a killer chorus and lyrics that could be about any relationship across the world. It's just a pity that she can't deliver more of this. While 'Wish I Stayed' was a perfectly good acoustic song when released before the album, it has been over produced into a seething electric song, ruining the admirable voice that Goulding undeniably has. The album closers round off the album without giving you much thought and the overall consensus is that Goulding has produced an album with some great tracks, and some mundane songs. The main problem with the album is the production. It seems Goulding never quite knows whether she wants to be an acoustic singer/songwriter or an electro pop artist, and most songs find her lingering somewhere in between. A combination of electric pop and acoustic music doesn't sound to appealing, and from this can be proved not to be. This is not saying Goulding has no promise, she does, but first she needs to decide who she wants to be musically.
