I can't see any similarities in the guitaring at all, for me it's the drumming and the ryhthm of it in most places that's similar. They're sort of similar groups but theres very little that you can pin on both as having in common? It's hard to explain

That's more down to Stephen Street as a producer though I'd say, having produced both bands. There are similarities in production but those are Stephen Street trademarks, you can find that in Kaiser Chiefs and the Ordinary Boys as well, or anyone else Street produced

Yeah that's the most Smithsy in my opinion and all. The chord sequence in NYD NYD and Fallowfield is classic Johnny Marr.

www.last.fm/music/The+Housemartins/_/Hopelessly+Devoted+To+Them ^^Check out this song if you haven't heard it / made the connection before haha The Housemartins were basically a Smiths rip off band and it's funny that the NYD NYD riff/chords is basically exactly the same as Hopelessly Devoted to Them...a bit ironic in a way haha

The Courteeners do sometimes remind me of The Smiths. You can see how much Liam Fray is influenced by The Smiths.

Housemartins were a top band, as were the Beautiful South, I'd argue that Paul Heaton is one of the most underrated songwriters in British pop history. It does sound like NYD NYD, but it's a very common chord sequence is A F#m C#M E, used throughout the ages, don't reckon it were intentional on Fray's part.
