in light of my conversation with Fergal recently i thought i would express my opinion relevant to that situation.
Why I stay away from "britpop"?
I never wanted to come across as an elitist so I thought I'd explain myself. I've never exactly made it a secret that none of Oasis, Blur, The Stone Roses, The Smiths are among my favourite bands. At times I'd even go as far to say I dislike the bands, particularly the Roses.
This isnt blanket though, I think the Masterplan is a stunning track, I love when Song 2 comes on in town and There is a Light... is among some of my favourite tunes from that time. I dont dislike these bands because they are minimalist, or dont have guitar solos, or because the lead men generally have big egos, I think its more to do with subject of lyrics.
Theres alot of realistic lyrics but the real world is something I find quite boring. It takes alot of genius to write something interesting about the real world and I appreciate that. It probably doesnt take as much genius to write something interesting about a fictional topic but because I have this disinterest for the real world I do look for lyrics that are abit more out there, and yes this does occasionally translate into more (for lack of a better word) creative type of music.
There is nothing elitist about it. It just comes down to personal preference and I dont think less of people for liking these bands. If anything I think less of myself because I have this disinterest with the real world.
Lets have nothing else to be said on the topic. Hope it cleared things up.
