Why I am proud of The Courteeners.
Now they might not be happy I'll be using this quote as the centerpiece of this column but hey ho thats amateur journalism. Conan said "Why make the same record twice?" recently and it fills me with confidence for the new album.
I mean, people will ask for one thats abit rock n roll, ie. one that sounds like Cavorting, or something along those lines. But I've never understood this, if you go into an album with an idea of making it sound like your previous work, you end up stale, and people love your old tracks more than your new ones. Case in point. Oasis' first two albums or Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream compared to Muse and Radiohead who reach peak after peak. Its because they dont try and cover themselves. Why would we want to hear something that sounds like Cavorting when we already have Cavorting?
And thank god Liam seems to know this. The tunes we have heard so far seem to be brilliant. Great bands all seem to make a mockery of the "tricky second album" theory, and I could see the Courteeners doing this. What I've heard so far is brilliant and any album that cites Elbow, The Coral, Bowie etc as an influence will automatically have a place in my mind.
Of course, I could end up let down by the album because of my high expectations, but the great albums are the ones that meet the expectations even though they were high. Not so quietly confident the next album will do this. And that the boys have a big future that doesnt involve unnecessary fall outs and a trough in quality.
Good Times are Calling!
