My friend said to me the other day a phrase which, if I was in charge, would amount to high treason and carry the death penalty. We were listening Sticks n Stones by Jamie T in the Mad Ferret and he said "we should just leave music to the Americans shouldnt we?"; at which point my jaw landed in my Guinness.
Music is subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinion, thats all fair enough. Maybe its me who is wrong in this instance; America has given us; Bon Jovi, Green Day, Blink 182 and so many others you will no doubt know one or two songs by. All of these bands will have one thing in common though, and that is lack of originality. If you compare the cream of American bands to the cream of English bands, both now and other the years, we put them to shame, or so I think.
To digress for a second, I would like to say this about America on the whole, they are the biggest superpower in the world and yet they are still serial copyists. Musically this is blatant, with the possible exception of Nirvana, but also just look at a map and you see New York, New England, Manchester, Birmingham etc. Theres no Washington in the United Kingdom. No Seattle. Footballl is even starting to take off over there, although its Soccer of course, maybe they are starting to see a pattern. I would be blind to say we do not borrow from Americans over here but they are the dictators of the world right now, by far the biggest influence.
The funny thing was, I know he isnt a fan of the American bands that maybe retain credibility; Nirvana, Pearl Jam, not Foo Fighters, which for me makes the statement even more ridiculous. Repairing my jaw, I then gave the offender a good scolding, ignoring the nagging feeling of music snobery.
The problem is, I concluded, that we dont have enough punk pop bands from our parts. Lostprophets and Youmeatsix are the examples I can think of, though there is probably others. While he may think this is an issue to bemoan, its one of the few reasons to be patriotic of modern England.
Disagree? As usual; dont ask
