just got myself an acoustic guitar, and a book on how to play chords etc. the first thing its trying to teachme is wild wood by weller, i thought sweet. its teaching me to put middle finger on 4th string on 2nd fret. which ive managed, but i cant read the music bars, and dont know how to get the rhythm going. do i pluck all strings, and hold 4th string down, or just plcuk 4th string? massively confused here!!

Is it just telling you to put your finger on that string, and only that string?? I taught myself so I'm just as confused, though I'd assume that you just play the one string, but I honestly haven't a clue, I just read chords out of an old book and put them together. Sorry.

f*ck books mate, what you want to do is learn yourself the basic open chords ( A, Am, E, Em, G,C,D,Dm,F etc) and then make sure you can play a barre chord, then use the net to learn the songs you want.

Spot on Cal, get the chords for like every song that ever existed on internet, the only bit you have to put thought into is the strumming pattern, but as long as you know the song then that's piss. But now you've bought the book you may aswell give it a chance.

Aye, I bought my guitar a few months ago, and although i'm not actually very good, everything you need is on the internet! Just, make sure you can tune it in, and if you can't buy an electric guitar tuner! I snapped my strings the other day trying to tune it haha!!

if its a chord, most likely play all the strings, tabs are easy to understand so get em understood.

I don't know where I'd be without my electric tuner, I fucking tone deaf. I know that if you like get the top string right then it's easy from there, but I just can't get the top string right.
