I have already posted in myspace blog about my current unemployment and voiced a few opinions I know I have to go back into my current line of work for the short-term just to get some serious cash behind me but I do want to plan for the future. Searching google isn't very exciting and can take soooo long when you don't really know the job title. I know I want to carry on with the sort of stuff I'm doing now, like designing and packaging merchandise, CD sleeves and flyers but don't really know what job this would be in the music industry Band Merchandiser? Product/Brand Designer? Band Promoter? I haven't the foggiest of how I could even get into it with my lack of qualifications and experience and it's going to be hard to find someone willing to give me a chance. I have been looking into qualifications/skills I would need in these related areas and would need photoshop/illustrator/quark/web design. An alternative would be to start my own business to offer my services to bands. I would have to really think about this one with some in-depth research to see what is involved. In the meantime, I'll ask local firms if they need a 'steel erector' and then start the road to a career change once up and running again. At least I can get on with the forum and sort out the t-shirt whilst off work ;D

Hooray! I got a phone call this evening asking if I could work tomorrow. It's only for a week or so but it'll get a bit of extra cash... Oh it's steel erecting, so I'll have to bite my tongue and get on with it.
Cheers for the book advice Cal, I found the title you suggested and a few others I think will be useful... ...it will only cost 0.01p from amazon, the postage is £2. Bargain

I would have to really think about this one with some in-depth research to see what is involved. if you've not got a design degree mate i think you will struggle to get in. best bet is to find out which design agencies they use for their promo stuff/web presence, then see if you can blag your way in as an unpaid intern for a while to gain experience. the competition amongst people who have/are studying for the relevant qualifications for these jobs is incredible, so be prepared for rejection, and be persistent. in the meantime offer your services for free to some local up and coming bands who aren't signed and could use your help with websites/forums etc. literally there is no such thing as too much experience so just do anything and everything you can get your hands on. learn the aforementioned software packages as well - you will need to be excellent with them, not just proficient or good. g

Cheers g! Yeah I know it will be virtually impossible to get into this without being able to know all that software inside out. As you'll probably see I can just about get by with photoshop and quite slow using it All the guides and that don't seem to sink in, I think distant learning or an open university course would benefit me and make me want to learn. I have been thinking about offering unsigned bands help and now you have mentioned it I'll really put some effort and thought into what I could do for them

hmmm id be willing to be helped out Darren?! When do you want to start mate? As you know, I've heard your demos on myspace and think you have the talent and right attitude to get somewhere. I'll help to promote you without a doubt but I do think you have done alright on your own so far! We could get to work on a CD-R to sell or give away at your gigs, of course it can't be your bog standard cd-r, we'll have to work on it (I do like the the images you've been putting on myspace). It's up to you what you want to use me for ;D
