NME are doing this in their magazine this week, I thought i'd start a thread on it...as no doubt they they will not include some great lyrics which should be present.

nice one. Ill go with one I voted for best lyric in Q magazines decade issue recently...and won.
"Ive had recurring nightmares, that I was loved for who I am, and missed the opportunity, to be the better man.." - Hoodoo, Muse
the whole song infact.

'he said i've been to year 3000, not much has changed but they live underwater, and your great great great granddaughter, is pretty fine' - year 3000, busted.

Be interesting to see who they put in this.
Obviously Guy Garvey and Alex Turner will dominate for their work over the past decade, and rightly so.
As its ever Dylan will obviously be in there. Nick Cave. People like that.
I think its a bit extreme to do best ever. Country music has some great lyricists as does rap music. I imagine it will be fairly biast.

Weller's a massively underrated lyricist, people often overlook the brilliance of his lyrics, really you have to look no further than most of Setting Sons but a few of the gems in the bigger hits include "You choose your leaders and place your trust/But the lies wash you down and the promises rust" and "And you find out life isn't like that/It's so hard to understand/Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam". And there is that Morrissey fellow...

I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand, curb these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man.
For some reason I just love this.

And this.
Asylums with doors open wide Where people had paid to see inside For entertainment they watch his body twist Behind his eyes he says, I still exist
It's so haunting when you know he's describing himself. That's how he saw Joy Division gigs. I think it's immense.

And I see you lying there, like a lilo losing air.
Foals - Spanish Sahara
That's about all I can think off right now.

I'm stigmatized, because I love you But like the sky, I'm miles above you Even though you're standing next to me, you seem so far away Because I am lost in your infinity, and I can't escape

I could simply pick millions and millions.
To name a few names, Dylan is in a class of his own, genius poet, some of his songs are just perfect lyrically start to finish. Morrissey of course, he tells the story of everyones life, he makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you laugh, he is again up there. Even though U2 arent everyones cup of tea, I believe Bono is a fantastic lyricist, no so much now as he was, but some stuff he has written is without doubt some of the best I've heard, particularly Achtung Baby. So many more lyrics by many other men, but these are my 3 favourties.

Matt Bellamy currently leading the NME poll for best lyricist ever....
which is complete bullshit, even in my opinion. He has his moments but I could probably name five I prefer immediately...infact...
Thom Yorke Laura Marling Carl Barat Kurt Cobain Josh Homme
easy.
