Loads of Great bands have come out of Manchester (I'd like to think more than any were else.)
What 12 songs do you think would best represent Manchester?
What musicians would be best to play on this album (Singer, Lead guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Bass, Drummer,)

Fools Gold, She Bangs The Drum, Song For My Sugar Spun Sister. Basically anything off that first album by the Roses. The first album really changed the whole scene.

we'd certainly have to have there is a light that never goes out (smiths), one or two smiths tracks on there, blue monday (new order), live forever and cigarettes and alcohol (oasis), so many roses to chose from, id go for this is the one and ressurection personally the supergroup: Vocals - Liam Gallagher Lead Guitar - Johnny Marr Rythm Guitar - Noel Gallagher Bass - Peter Hook Drums - Reni
or alternatively, just The Stone Roses

hello, this is 2008.
the problem with manchester is that it is stuck up its own arse with its musical history. i used to blame the students for this, coming to our city becuase they love the roses or something, hence every indie club in town playing the roses/smiths/happy mondays every fucking night.
Whilst on a personal level it is good to know about your musical history, its very unhealthy to get stuck in the past, particuarly for a city.
Because then you become liverpoo. And nobody wants to be like liverpoo.
This city has plenty to offer, stop going back to the last century.

yeah your right in a way, but you cant deny the past, there been some amazing bands from Manchester and without them music (probably) wouldnt be the same. i think, just coz a band from the last 20 years isnt around, they shouldnt be forgotton. (unless theyre shit)

Well somethings got stuck up your arse toastedmonkey-bollocks!! Some kind of self manc-loathing it seems? Whats wrong with having a 'chat' about the musical history of a city that has given this country so much? I didn't realize music that was over eight years old was so dated and I'm VERY, VERY sorry if I upset you, by bringing back memories of (gasp) students!!! If there were a few more decent bands about at the moment maybe I could get excited about that, but seeing as there seems to be a decreasing number of original new bands on the up. I'll have to make do with talking about old stuck up Manchester bands.... I'll make sure I start a thread about who's going to win the brits......2012, maybe you could pass your negative eye and comment over that one .

some of the greatest ever bands have come from manchester, nobody can hide away from that.
on the other hand....if a band/era was crap, then you should forget about it. But i dont think manchester and bands such as oasis, the smiths and stone roses can be forgotten.

i'm not denying that some very very good bands have come from manchester, and i'm certainly not saying they should be forgotten, but this city is obsessed about them.
If this city wants to continue its musical legacy it has to stop living in the past. Bands like The Smiths and Happy Mondays were completely different to the bands around at that time, the only manchester bands that get any attention nowadays are ones that sound like the roses or oasis.
There are more new mancunian bands around now, than anytime in the last five years, covering a range of genres. Some are very very good, but get so little attention because the lead singer doesn't have "the swagger" or the accent.
People are always looking for a "new oasis" or the "new smiths," when really we need bands that are going to define, rather than repeat.
